Wanda was born in Portsmouth, Virginia and raised in Maryland. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Hampton University. Her stand-up career began at a Coors Light Super talent Showcase in Washington, DC where she performed for the first time in front of a live audience.
She spent 5 years as part of the HBO's "Chris Rock Show" and is now focusing her attention to recurring roles on television and starring and voicing in movies.
Although Wanda did some writing for the 74th Academy Awards, none of her jokes were used. Wanda stands at a petite 5' 2" or 1.57 m. Wanda married David Hall in 1991. They divorced in 1998. They had no children together. Wanda is a supporter of the Keep A Child Alive foundation, along with celebrities such as Richard Gere, Cynthia Nixon, Kimora Lee Simmons and several others. Wanda has been nominated for a 2007 Primetime Emmy in the category of Outstanding Variety, Music Or Comedy Special. Wanda also plays Granny May on the PBSkids show "The Amazing Colossal Adventures of Wordgirl." Wanda prefers being a guest star in a sitcom, rather than a show writer, because at the end of the day, her job is done. She doesn't have to toss and turn, thinking about the next day's jokes. Wanda used to wait tables, cashier in a video store, cook Chinese food in a fast food restaurant, and work with the Government before she went to full time comedy. Wanda was a government employee by day and a comedian by night until she was discovered by Chris Rock, and went on to open for him on tour. Wanda was nominated for an NAACP Image Award in the category of 'Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series' for Curb Your Enthusiasm in January 2006. Wanda has written jokes for: MTV Video Awards 1999, MTV Movie Awards, 74th Annual Academy Awards, and The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show. Wanda's first book Yeah, I Said It was published by Simon and Shuster, hit bookstores in September 2004. Wanda earned her Bachelors Degree of Sciences in Marketing from Hampton University, and is a member of the sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha Incorporated. In 2003, Wanda earned a Comedy Central Commie Award for "Funniest TV Actress". In 2001, she won the American Comedy Award for "Outstanding Female Stand Up Comic". Wanda won a second Emmy in 2002 for her work on Inside the NFL. She was nominated for three Primetime Emmy's and in 1999 won the Emmy for "Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special." for her work at the Chris Rock Show.
