Born and raised in Baltimore, Tracie Thoms' artistic ambitions became clear when she was just a little girl. By the time she was 10 years old, Tracie had made it clear to her parents that she wanted to pursue a career as an actress. Tracie enrolled at the Baltimore School for the Arts -- a high school that boasts Jada Pinkett Smith and Tupac Shakur among its more well-known alumni. Following a stint at Howard University -- where she eventually received a bachelor’s in fine arts -- Tracie started to study acting at New York City’s prestigious Juilliard School.
Tracie made her professional debut in 2002, with appearances in a pair of failed sitcoms and a small role in the Comedy Central film Porn ‘n Chicken. Tracie spent the next couple of years popping up on TV shows like The Shield and in obscure films such as 2004’s Brother to Brother and The Warrior Class. But Tracie’s big break came with a recurring role in the FOX show Wonderfalls. Although only four episodes were aired before it was canceled, Wonderfalls opened a lot of doors for Tracie. In 2005, Tracie was one of only two actors added to the original Broadway cast of Rent for its feature film adaptation (Rosario Dawson was the other actor).
Rent led directly to Tracie’s current stint on the hit CBS show Cold Case, as well as her appearances in 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada and 2007's Grindhouse. She’ll also be seen in the 2008 comedy Sex and Breakfast alongside Macaulay Culkin and Eliza Dushku, and she’s tackling the first starring role of her career in a comedy called Jimmie in the fall of 2007.
