McFly rose to fame after fellow band Busted helped launch them by inviting them to tour in March 2004. Carrie Fletcher of musical fame is Tom's younger sister.

Along with Danny Jones, Fletcher plays guitar for McFly. Dougie Poynter assists on backing vocals and plays bass while Harry Judd plays the drums. Fletcher created McFly shortly after not being chosen for the English band Busted. He writes the majority of McFly's songs with Jones, Poynter and Judd. James Bourne, formerly of Busted, is a good friend and has assisted with songwriting on occasions.

One of McFly's songs, "Friday Night" can be heard in the UK movie, "Night at the Museum" in the end credits. Also, the soundtrack for the American film "Just My Luck" consists entirely of McFly's songs, which are featured in the film's end credits as well as throughout the film. The song "Star Girl" was played in the background advertisement of the movie "The Holiday".

McFly made it into the Guiness Book of World Records, beating The Beatles out of the slot for "youngest band to have a debut album go straight to number one".

Tom Fletcher has written/co-written seven number-one singles: 'Crashed The Wedding' and 'Who's David' for Busted. 'Five Colours in Her Hair' (Bourne, Jones, Fletcher), 'Obviously' (Fletcher, Jones, Bourne), 'All About You' (Fletcher), 'I'll Be OK' (Fletcher, Jones, Poynter), 'Please, Please' (Fletcher, Jones, Poynter, Judd), 'Star Girl' and 'Transylvania' (Poynter, Fletcher) were all written for his band McFly.

He has also co-written eight of the songs on Busted's second album, 'A Present for Everyone', as well as all bar one ('Not Alone' - Jones) of the tracks on McFly's debut album, 'Room on the 3rd Floor'. The album shot straight to number one in the UK charts, as did the second album 'Wonderland'. The second album included the track 'She Falls Asleep', an epic track about a suicidal girl in which Fletcher sings and plays piano. He helped rewrite the theme tune for the newest 'Thunderbirds' along with James Bourne, which was a number one single for Busted. His most recent number-one is Transylvania which was a double A-side with the Jellyfish cover "Baby's Coming Back".

Fletcher's variety of influences include musical theatre, film composer John Williams and popular bands such as the Beatles, The Beach Boys, Queen, Green Day, Blink 182, The Used and many others.

Tom attended Sylvia Young Theatre School and played "Oliver" in the westend musical at the London Palladium. Tom was also featured in a short film on AIDS awareness, appeared in a TV commercial for Curry's and was once an extra in EastEnders, kicking a football in the background. He played a character called Dean in Grange Hill, but wasn't a main character. Tom was also an extra on Live and Kicking, where he was sent to buy the boys their shopping. He has appeared briefly in the video for the 1995 Mike & The Mechanics song 'Over My Shoulder'. Also, His voice was heard as "Spot" the dog in the Spot the Dog episode, Spot and his Grandparents Go to the Carnival.

Tom has also appeared, with the rest of McFly, in the 20th Century Fox film Just My Luck (2006), which also stars Lindsay Lohan and Chris Pine.

Tom has a tattoo - a dark blue five-pointed star on his foot and another on his left chest. He also has 'big' on his foot, standing for 'big foot'. The rest of the band share similar tattoos, including 'athletes', 'bare' and 'good ef'.
