In his first season with the Rays, Martinez was the veteran leader the team hoped he would be. He rebounded from two subpar seasons with the Cardinals to hit 23 home runs and drive in 76 runs in 458 at-bats. He hit his 300th career home run while the Rays were playing the Yankees in Japan and finished second on the team with 66 walks.
