Dunn was soon performing with the Mercury Hip-Hop Squad, dancing for Nebellen Dance Company and Epik Dance Company and as a back-up dancer for European pop stars. Despite being happy as a dancer, Dunn also wanted to pursue a music career. In order to earn enough money to move to Los Angeles to further her dream, Dunn began working as a server while teaching dance and performing at Phoenix Suns games at night. She was chosen by Suns Vice President of Game Entertainment Kip Helt to trampoline dunk with the Verve Sol Patrol and the Suns Gorilla. She would also breakdance on court for Phoenix Mercury and Suns games. She took dancing gigs on the side, opening for Lil Wayne in Tucson as a dancer. By then she had saved up enough money to make the trip to Los Angeles.
However, once there, she could not find work for a year. She auditioned for the Pussycat Dolls with a throat infection and a cracked a tooth. She also racked up bills for an emergency root canal in Phoenix and repairs for her car which had broken down and was eating into her savings. She eventually found jobs to get by, often working till late in the night and having to wake up early the next day for auditions. Dunn was featured on two songs on MC Magic's Magic City Part 2 in 2008. Dunn heard from friends about an audition for a girlgroup held by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins. She filmed an audition tape of her performing a song while playing acoustic guitar and she was subsequently invited to audition by Jerkins. She was chosen as one of four members for the group out of 300 auditions.
The group disbanded after three months, but Jerkins began working with Dunn for a solo career. They accumulated 30 songs that they submitted to Epic Records, who invited her to audition for them for a recording contract. "Shut the Front Door (Got My Girls)" was included on Now That's What I Call Music! 35 and was released for free on Dunn's website. The song peaked at number fourteen on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart in early 2011. She was removed from Epic's artist roster. She shot the video for "Make Me Sick" in early 2012, but never released it.
