Born in Pasadena, California on July 17, 1988 to an American mother and a father who is a Saudi Arabian citizen, Summer spent most of her childhood in Saudi Arabia. When she was three, her family moved from Pasadena to Saudi Arabia. Two years later, her father's job as an international banker required them to transfer to the tiny island of Bahrain. While there, she attended the only U.S. Department of Defense school in the Middle East. After the events of 9/11, they finally returned to Southern California.
As a child, she has always had a keen interest in American films. And since she was five, Bishil already had an idea that she wanted to become an actress. So after completing her independent study program for high school, Summer enrolled in an acting class and was discovered soon after. Her first acting job was a role on the short-lived Nickelodeon show, Just for Kicks. She has also appeared in the children shows such as Drake and Josh and Hannah Montana.
In 2007, Summer got her big break as she was cast as lead in Alan Ball's film feature directorial debut, Towelhead which earned praise at the Toronto Film Festival. She played a 13-year-old Arab-American girl trying to navigate through her adolescence and sexual awakening.
