Shobna Gulati, who was born on 7 August 1966 in Oldham, England, is a famous English actress, writer and dancer of Indian origin. She has completed her degree in Arabic and Middle-Eastern politics. Shobna Gulati can speak six different languages and is a supporter of Asian women’s rights and several anti-racism campaigns. She is a single mother and has a son named Akshay.
Shobna Gulati gave a remarkable performance as Sunita Alahan in Coronation Street, a long-running soap opera that was telecast from 2001 to 2006. She is also one of very few actors who have appeared in both Coronation Street and its competitor series EastEnders aired on British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for which she acted in 2000. Shobna Gulati received much appreciation for her performance in dinnerladies, a British sitcom written and co-produced by British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award-winner Victoria Wood. It was aired on BBC One for 16 episodes from 1998 to 2000. Shobna Gulati acted in the BAFTA award-winning short film Shadowscan directed by Tinge Krishnan in 2001. Her excellent performance in the play Dancing within Walls at the Contact Theatre in Manchester, earned her a nomination for a Manchester Evening News Theatre Award in 2004.
Shobna Gulati has made several appearances in television game shows on BBC Two, including Call My Bluff, Have I Got News for You and The Weakest Link. In 2006, she took part in the Independent Television’s (ITV) talent show Stars in Their Eyes, one of the most-watched shows of the United Kingdom (UK). In the Celebrity special of that show, where a contestant has to impersonate any showbiz star, Shobna Gulati impersonated Dina Ross, an American twelve-time Grammy and Oscar-nominated singer, record producer and actress. The same year, she participated in the reality singing competition Soapstar Superstar, produced by the Granada Television. She made several appearances in the British television series Where the Heart Is and New Street Law. She also acted in the comedy drama Magnolia, which was written for BBC’s Comedy Playhouse series by Dave Spikey, a famous English comedian. In October 2006, Shobna Gulati acted in a short comedy sketch The Secret Policeman's Ball, along with Nitin Ganatra at the Royal Albert Hall, Knightsbridge, England. She also appeared as a storyteller in the Children’s BBC (CBBC) television series Jackanory. She was also part of the UK tour of Louise Roche's hit play Girls Night. In 2007, Shobna Gulati performed in the play Pretend You Have Big Buildings at the Royal Exchange Theatre located in Manchester.
