Iranian beauty Shiva Rose gained notoriety with her marriage to a popular actor of film and television but quickly secured her own fame with a critically lauded acting career.
Shiva Rose Gharibafshar was born February 8, 1969 in Santa Monica, California. She is of Irish and Persian extraction. Born into the world of acting, her father is Parviz Gharibafshar, Iranian actor most noted for his role in Caravans (1978) opposite Anthony Quinn and Christopher Lee.
Making a name for herself, Rose secured her acting debut in 1998 on the popular legal drama The Practice. Created and written by David E Kelley, Rose appeared beside cast regulars Dylan McDermott, Michael Badalucco, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Steve Harris, Camryn Manheim, Kelli Williams, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Marla Sokoloff.
It’s not difficult to figure how Rose won the role, seeing as she was married to the show’s main star, McDermott. The two had a daughter, Charlotte Rose, on September 8, 2005, and they married shortly after on November 19, 2005. Their daughter Colette was born the following year. Although they remained together for another ten years, it was confirmed on September 27, 2007 that the couple has officially separated.
On the professional front, 1999 brought Rose’s film debut with How to Get Laid at the End of the World. Already an independent film and prone to commercial obscurity, the film was also a critical flop.
She had better luck with her next project, Black Days, which appeared in 2001 with costars Stirling Gardner, D Reynolds, and Sarah Silverman. She also enjoyed success with a bit part in the Billy Crystal directed film 61* opposite Barry Pepper, Thomas Jane, Anthony Michael Hall, and Christopher McDonald.
Although starring roles continued to elude her, she did manage to secure bit parts in consistently successful and acclaimed films such as her 2002 appearance in 13 Moons. Again, her part was minor, but she got to work with independent and mainstream stars such as Jennifer Beals, Steve Buscemi, and Sam Rockwell.
She continued in this manner until 2006 when she truly had her breakout performance. Until that point she was stuck with small roles in commercial films or substantial roles in commercially limited films, but that changed with David & Layla. Starring with David Moscow, Peter Van Wagner, and Polly Adams, Rose finally had the best of both worlds—a big role in a big movie. Although the film never saw massive commercial or critical attention, Rose was honored at the Ft Lauderdale International Film Festival with the Jury Award for Best Breakthrough Performance as well as the President Award for Best Breakthrough Performance.
Following this success, Rose’s career has seen an increase in mainstream roles. This includes an appearance in two episodes of CSI: Miami with David Caruso, Emily Procter, Khandi Alexander, and Sofia Milos.
Most recently, she was seen in a 2007 episode of Las Vegas. This role allowed her to rub elbows with cast regulars James Caan, Josh Duhamel, Nikki Cox, and Molly Sims as well as guest stars Morena Baccarin, Sandra Bernhard, and Cheryl Ladd.
