Regina Taylor was born in Dallas, Texas, but was raised in Oklahoma. After graduating from The Southern Methodist University, she moved to New York to pursue acting on stage, and in movies and television. On Broadway, she became the first African-American to play Juliet in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. She went on to do various other parts on and off Broadway, as well as landing roles on television shows (such as Law and Order) and then on the critically acclaimed show I'll Fly Away (1991). Taylor played the role of Lilly Harper on this short lived show, but quickly became an audience favorite. She has starred in such movies as Lean On Me, Losing Isaiah, Clockers, Courage Under Fire, and The Negotiator. Taylor is also an accomplished playwright. She decided to retire from acting a few years ago, but when the executive producers for the new tv show The Unit asked her to read for the part of Molly Blane, she was swept back into the world of acting.
