Hermann was born in Germany to German parents and lived there until the age of ten.[1] He then moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, where he attended Brunswick School through secondary school, while active in student drama productions. He then went on to Yale University, graduating in 1990. After graduating, Hermann joined the two-year service organization Teach For America.
