Wanchope’s soccer career began in his home country of Costa Rica, where he played for Club Sport Herediano. In 1997, he headed across the Atlantic Ocean to play for Derby County in England. He scored 28 goals for the team -- one of which took place in his debut against Manchester United.
He was sold to West Ham United, where he was basically a round peg trying to fit into a square hole. He ended up being sold to Manchester City after compiling 15 goals in 46 games for West Ham.
Despite these frequent trades, Wanchope has shown flashes of greatness; however, his inability to produce sustained efforts has held him back. After the 2004 season wrapped up, he was sold to Malaga CF of Spain for £500,000 (roughly US $890,000), but once again, he had a hard time getting adjusted.
Ultimately, Wanchope’s greatest successes have been for the Costa Rican national team: He played in the 2002 World Cup in addition to a few Gold Cups. In July 2005, he signed on with the Qatari champions, Al Gharafa.
