Melissa Bell is the weekend meteorologist for WBZ-TV News on WBZ-TV , forecasting the weather on Saturdays at 6:00AM, 6:00PM and 11:00PM and on Sundays at 6:00AM, 11:00AM, 6:30PM and 11:00 PM. Bell is a member of the American Meteorological Society and holds the Seal of Approval.
Bell joined WBZ-TV in May 2001 from the CBS affiliate WBTV-TV in Charlotte, North Carolina where she was the meteorologist for WBTV’s weekday morning newscasts since 1998. She loved the challenge of forecasting for a region which extended from western mountains, including Mt. Mitchell, the highest mountain in the eastern US, to the Carolina coastal plain. It was not unusual for the western Carolinas to experience wild weather from hurricanes to ice and snow storms. She was also actively involved with local schools to promote severe weather awareness and encourage young girls to pursue careers in the sciences.
Before joining WBTV in Charlotte, Bell worked at WALA-TV (Fox) in Mobile, Alabama as meteorologist for the station’s morning and noon broadcasts from 1996 to 1998. She forecasted for a coastal region along the Gulf of Mexico, which proved to be a great experience for her in covering tropical storms and hurricanes. Prior to that, she worked for three years as a meteorological consultant and software applications developer for PRC, Inc. in Reston, Virginia, where she advised on the development of the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) for the National Weather Service. Before working with PRC, she worked for the National Weather Service in Tucson, Arizona, as a meteorological technician.
Bell was born and raised in Wayne, New Jersey, but ventured to the desert southwest for college. She attended the University of Arizona in Tucson, where she received a bachelor of science degree in Atmospheric Science, with a minor in Mathematics and Physics. Most of Bell’s favorite hobbies are sports related. During the winter months, she is an avid skier, alpine racer and race coach. She competes locally in weekly league racing in addition to special alpine events such as the Jay Peak downhill, where she was clocked at 75mph! In the summer, her passion is slalom water skiing. She also enjoys volleyball, hiking, field hockey, soccer, cycling, scuba diving, cooking, gardening and scrapbooking. Bell currently resides in a suburb outside of Boston with her husband and three children.
