“It's amazing how things that are so right for you come back. It's like a revolving door. I majored in History and Political Science at the College of Charleston. I took one theater course and the theater professor, at the end, for my final paper wrote on the back, 'I know you are majoring in History and Political Science, but I think you should change your major to Theater.' She wrote me that and pulled me aside afterwards and said she thought I should major in theater. I was like, 'Really? Wow! I'd love to be an actor! I've always loved to tell stories. I love characters, I love going to movies and I love watching TV.” Matt Czuchry (on how he got into acting).
A History and Political Science student, Matt Czuchry became interested in acting after taking one theater class in college and was encouraged by his professor him to change his major to drama. He later studied acting with Belita Moreno, star of the comedy series “The George Lopez Show.” Being asked what he has learned from his studies, Matt explained: “You learn about yourself from these classes, who you are and who to tap into that. You learn technical aspects of the business, as well, but the main thing else I will say is that you learn about yourself and you learn how to tap into that. We're creating characters, that's what I love and, again, with imagination I've done it all my life. I'm so fortunate to have a job where that's what I do. I create characters and I tell stories. In class, I just learn about myself and how to tap into that and how to play all these other characters. So, class is fun for me because I'm studying how to do something I love. It's a great thing.”
Entering the new millennium, Matt landed his earliest acting jobs, as a guest in an episode of NBC cult teen drama/comedy series "Freaks and Geeks" and Fox short-lived dramedy starring Milo Ventimiglia, "Opposite Sex." He also had a recurring role, as Sean McGrail, on the WB drama series "Young Americans." In the show, Matt met his girlfriend of two years, Kate Bosworth.
“'Young Americans' (2000) was one of my early jobs. I had been in LA for about 8 months when I got that job. There was a casting director, Jason Wood and the creator of the show, Steven Antin. When you first come out to LA, it takes some people believing in you. You need some champions to get the ball rolling. Jason Wood and Steven Antin championed me. They saw something that they wanted to put in the project and that's how that one happened for me. I was fresh off the boat and it really takes somebody to say, 'We see something in this guy. We want him to be on our show!' I'm completely grateful for that. Every job is different and for that one, that really was the creator of the show saying, 'This guy is new, but I see something in him and let's give him a shot!' I mark most of my life on that point.” Matt Czuchry.
Matt began appearing in films in 2002. He played the lead role of a happy-go-lucky, all-American kid who suddenly faces terminal cancer, in Robert J. Emery's adaptation of Don Robertson's novel, Swimming Upstream, with Kelly Rutherford and Michael Moriarty as his parents. He also co-starred with Piper Perabo, playing the football quarterback, in director Melanie Mayron's teen comedy movie Slap Her... She's French (aka She Gets What She Wants). He recalled: “'Slap Her, She's French' (2002) comes out in August. I play the football quarterback and Piper Perabo from 'Coyote Ugly' is in it. It's a fun movie. I would say it's a romantic comedy.”
In that same year, Matt was cast in Gil Cates Jr.'s modern rave take on William Shakespeare's romantic comedy play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, alongside Corey Pearson, Lauren German and Andrew Keegan. He also played the boyfriend of Scarlett Johansson's character in Ellory Elkayem's horror/comedy film starring David Arquette and Kari Wührer, Eight Legged Freaks.
“I think he's a regular teenaged guy who just wants to have fun. He kind of faces some difficult challenges with these toxic spiders. It's a real character that's really deep and you have to go to personal levels (laughs). No, I'm just kidding. My character is just fun. It's just a good time. I just get chased by big giant spiders.” Matt Czuchry (on his character in the film Eight Legged Freaks (2002)).
And when asked about his experience working with David Arquette on the set of Eight Legged Freaks (2002), Matt said: “He is just such a gracious and kind person. He bought ribs for everybody this one time. He was just so gracious and such a kind man. I can't say enough good things as far as how kind he was to everyone on the crew and to his fellow actors. It was just a pleasure. He's the kind of guy that you would love to go out with for a beer because he's just a great guy, personally.”
Meanwhile, Matt was spotted as a guest in an episode of ABC legal drama "The Practice" and the WB family drama series "7th Heaven." He also co-starred with David Morse and Andre Braugher, playing Jamie Farrel (2003-2004), on CBS crime/drama series "Hack." Matt said: “I did a television show last year for CBS called 'Hack' (2003-2004) and it was with David Morse and Andre Braugher. It was just an amazing experience to work with those two guys who are just legends. They really took me under their wing and showed me what it really means to be an actor in this business. I think what they taught me was if you just come in, show up prepared, you do your work and you make the scene the best scene you can possibly make it. And that's your job! They do it and they do it amazingly and they do it well time after time and it was just an honor and a privilege to work with those two guys. They are like mentors to me. I learned so much from them.”
During his “Hack” stint, Matt appeared in the films Advantage Hart (2003), a short tennis comedy film by Jeff Seibenick in which he co-starred with then-girlfriend Kate Bosworth, and Em & Me (2004), which was helmed by L. James Langlois. He also appeared in the pilot episode of UPN sci-fi series "Jake 2.0" and in the WB's failed revival of the gothic soap opera, “Dark Shadows” (2004), alongside Alec Newman.
“It is just so happens that this pilot that I did this past Dark Shadows (2004; TV), which is a vampire project and so I got to have this whole prosthetic on the side of my neck like I got bitten by a vampire. Growing up I used to always play with special effect makeup and I love vampires and fantasies so I was like sign me up for that! It just depends on the project and it just so happens that's what has connected with me so far.” Matt Czuchry.
From 2004 to 2007, Matt played his most popular role to date, as Logan Huntzberger, Rory's (played by Alexis Bledel) boyfriend at Yale University, an underachiever son of a wealthy family, on the WB/CW hit drama/comedy series "Gilmore Girls." He was a recurring during the show's fifth season, but turned regular in its sixth and seventh seasons. The series finale of Gilmore Girls was on May 15, 2007. Matt's work in the show later earned him nominations at the Teen Choice awards in 2005 and 2006.
“This is a great show and to be a part of it is a huge responsibility and they were amazingly supportive of me coming onto the show. That's really an honor to have had them so supportive from the network to the studio to the creators of the show. It's just pretty amazing and I'm so thankful to be on the show.” Matt Czuchry.
Commenting about his character in the show, Matt said: “Logan's not a bad guy. He's just living life, you know, and trying to get Rory to live a little too. So, Rory is doing some bad things because Logan is. Is that such a terrible thing? It's just fun. Plain and simple fun.”
While working on "Gilmore Girls," Matt starred in Richie Keen's short comedy film Hooked (2006), playing an accountant who becomes a one-day celebrity after winning two front-row tickets to the Oscars. He was also spotted as a guest in an episode of Cartoon Network's animated series "Justice League" and the CW critically-acclaimed teen drama/mystery neo-noir series starring Kristen Bell, "Veronica Mars."
Recently, Matt was cast in the TV series pilot “Gravity” alongside Ryan Merriman for the 2007/2008 season, but it wasn't picked up by the CW.
“I'd love to be an animated character on 'South Park.' I want to be a voice on 'South Park.' That show is genius! I love that sensibility. I also love 'Six Feet Under.' Those are two shows that I really love the story and the characters. Those are two shows that I love and I'd love to be on them.” Matt Czuchry (on what show he would love to have a role on).
