Mandira Bedi was born in a Punjabi-speaking Bombay-based Bedi family on April 15, 1972. she did her schooling in the Cathedral & John Connon High School.Barely had she started working at Oglivy & Mather Advertising Agency, when she was offered to play a role on the small screen in Shanti. This led her to sign up for 'Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahoo Thee' also.
An Aries, she is passionate about live cricket and was thrilled when Sony Television offered her to compère 'Extra Innnings'. Her appearance in a wide array of designer Sarees glamorized the drab male-dominated cricket world which eventually led to a rise in viewer-ship. Cricket-obsessed viewers in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other countries, both male and female, were enchanted with this svelte, fresh-faced, sexy, Saree-clad, and wholesome Indian girl.
Fashion Designer, Satya Paul, designed cricket-themed Sarees, which included one with signatures of cricketers; another one with cricket newspaper headlines; one with animations of players; one with mini flags of cricket participating nations, which are just a few out of the 50 odd ones.Mandira married Bollywood Film Director, Raj Kaushal, quite dramatically on Valentine's Day 1999, and they live in Bandra, Bombay.
She has acted in hubby's movie 'Shaadi Ka Ladoo', and is currently involved in the filming of 'Dus Kahaniyan'. She likes doing a variety of screen roles, but prefers glamorized dramas. She would love to do negative roles, like the one in 'Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thee', but is told that she does not have a face for it. She has appeared in 'Fame Gurukool', she is the anchor of Set Max's World Cup Cricket 2007, a sitcom 'Papa Ban Gaya Hero' amongst others.Currently several of the designer Sarees, she has been seen wearing publicly, are being auctioned.
After her star-making turn in Shanti, appeared in a supporting role in the 1995 film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and played the main villainess, "Mandira", called "Mona" in the popular Indian soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Among her other career highlights was a stint as one of the presenters on the Indian television talent contest/reality show, Fame Gurukul [Performing Arts Academy Fame], which ended on 20 October 2005, replacing R. Madhavan as the anchor of Deal Ya No Deal, and performing hosting duties on the musical reality show Jo Jeeta Wohi Super Star, aired by one of India's most popular entertainment channels, STAR One, as well as posing for a photo layout in the men's magazine Maxim India Magazine.
She created a stir in Bangladesh over her criticism of the national cricket team following their win against India national cricket team in the 2007 Cricket World Cup group stages. In an episode of the program Extraa Innings, she wore a saree sporting flags of various nations taking part in the 2007 Cricket World Cup. The Indian flag was at the bottom of the saree, near her feet, leading to resentment among Indian viewers.
On grounds of having shown disrespect to the Indian national flag, a complaint was filed against her, through advocate S. K. Premrog. The complaint alleges that the offense is punishable under Section 2 of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 as amended by the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Act, 1998 and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Act, 2005. Accusations in the same case were also brought against the purported designer of the saree, Indian fashion creator Satya Paul.
She became embroiled in another controversy upon being spotted wearing on her back a tattoo of Ik Onkar, the Sikh symbol of unity of God, which led to a furious outpouring from the Sikh community. She has reportedly apologised to the key Sikh organization, SGPC (The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee), also referred to as the parliament of the Sikhs.
