McCann got her musical start at age four, when she sang "You Are My Sunshine" in her father's road band. For several years afterward, she sang many local events in her town. While in high school, Lila was given a demo of the song "Down Came a Blackbird"; she then recorded her own demo, which helped her to land a record deal with Elektra Records. Her debut album, Lila, came out in 1997. Although the album did not reach the Top 40, it was still certified platinum, and the album's second single ("I Wanna Fall In Love") was a Top 5 hit. Time magazine named her "Most Successful New Artist" in the same year.
