Early life and career beginnings Grant was born in New York City and grew up in Lake Placid, New York.When she was 15, Grant's parents shipped her off to Kent School, a boarding school in Connecticut, after getting involved in drugs and alcohol.She is the daughter of domain investor Rob Grant.Del Rey attended Fordham University in New York City prior to dropping out to pursue a music career.Lana chose her own stage name contrary to rumors that she was forced into her stage name by managers and lawyers.Lana said in a Vogue interview, "I wanted a name I could shape the music towards I was going to Miami quite a lot at the time, speaking a lot of Spanish with my friends from Cuba - Lana Del Rey reminded us of the glamour of the seaside.
