Alani “La La” Vasquez, an American of Puerto Rican descent, is a disc jockey, television personality and MTV VJ. Her Puerto Rican blood has in no way influenced her to unwittingly overplay selections from Ricky Martin’s oeuvre.
Vasquez's Puerto Rican parents settled in the borough of Brooklyn, where Vasquez was born. Contrary to urban legend, her first words were not “Brooklyn! What!” but she did take an immediate interest in music culture, and parlayed that interest into a career. While a student at Redan High School, she received her first big break with her debut in a radio show, called Future Flavas, alongside Ludacris (then known as Chris Lova Lova), and some guy named “Poon Daddy.” LaLa left the station in order to attend Howard University in Washington DC, while Chris went on to circumvent higher education and record multi-platinum albums, then completely lose his street cred by taking an acting role in Fred Claus. “Poon Daddy” would not receive a role in the children’s film.
In 1999 and with a Communications degree in hand, LaLa Vasquez moved to Los Angeles, and went to work for KKBT radio. There she was noticed by MTV and was invited to audition, although was not called back until a year later in 2003, when MTV execs decided the station was lacking in hosts named after major scale musical notes. She is now the co-host of MTV's Direct Effect and TRL, along with hosting the reunion specials for both seasons of VH-1’s Flavor of Love and the first seasons of I Love New York and Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School.
Vasquez made her film debut in 2001 as the appropriately named "LaLa the DJ" in Two Can Play at That Game starring Vivica A. Fox and Morris Chestnut.. In 2002 she was in the film Urban Massacre as "Pam Jackson". Vasquez also acted in the 2003 film Monster Island. In 2004 she had a supporting role as herself in You Got Served, and has continued to serve the hearts of millions with her Puerto Rican-American swagger.
On New Year’s Eve of 2003, Vasquez became engaged to Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony. They have a son, Kiyan Anthony, born in March of 2007. According to doctors, the odds that Kiyan will be a basketball commentator are, “better than Suri Cruise’s.”
