Born in 1977, Kym Johnson is an Australian dancer who has also achieved success as a model and a television personality. She has been dancing since she was two years old, but started performing as a ballroom dancer when she was fifteen. Together with her partner, Latvian Tomas Atkocevicius, Johnson finished second at the Australian Dancesport Championships and participated at the Blackpool Ballroom Championships. In 2001, she stopped competing professionally completely, but went on to make numerous appearances in television shows like the Australian and American versions of Dancing with the Stars.
Johnson’s stint on the Australian Dancing with the Stars lasted for three seasons, with her and partner, Tom Williams, winning the competition during season 2. She joined the American version of the show in 2006, where she was partnered with controversial talk show host, Jerry Springer . On the fourth season, Johnson was paired with former ‘N Sync member Joey Fatone , finishing second behind speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno and his partner Julianne Hough . For season 5, Johnson was paired with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban , and the pair was voted off in the fifth week. On season 6, Johnson is paired with magician Penn Jilette . This partnership was hardly successful, as they were eliminated on the second week. In 2008, Johnson was cast on the seventh season of Dancing with the Stars with NFL player Warren Sapp.
Johnson has appeared in a string of events and films, such as a Burn the Floor, a touring ballroom dance production, Elton John’s 50th birthday party, the Blade Runner launch party, and the film Strictly Ballroom. He also appears in the DVD Dancing with the Stars: Cardio Dance alongside Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Ashly Delgrosso-Costa. Meanwhile, in March, 2006, she posed for the Australian version of
Kym made her Australian television debut on the first smash hit series of "Dancing with the Stars" partnering with Justin Melvey, and most recently Michael Caton. It was, however, her triumphant achievement of winning series 2 with Tom Williams that propelled her fame nationwide.
Following their success, Kym starred on the "Champion of Champions" series, "Celebrity Survivor" on behalf of the Merry Makers Charity, and made a cameo performance on the fourth "Dancing with the Stars" Grand Final during Alex Lloyd's live rendition of "Amazing".
Kym is an Australian Ballroom Champion and World Representative of Ballroom Dance, but originally trained in ballet, tap, jazz, and and singing, as well as acrobatics, before specializing in ballroom. Kym actually began ballroom at the relatively late age of 15 when she was dragged to lessons by her brother who decided it would be a good way for him to meet girls. She soon got the bug and it wasn't long before she was dancing competitively.
Kym studied for over 2 years in the UK before being cast out of London in the highly acclaimed 6 month European and 6 month United States tour of "Burn the Floor". Kym performed at Paris Casino in Las Vegas, Royal Albert Hall in London, Radio City Music Hall in New York, Elton John's 50th Birthday and Cannes Film festival to name a few. Kym returned to Australia for Dame Edna/Barry Humphries national "Back to my Roots" production before rejoining "Burn the Floor" to continue with the world tour.
Kym was thrilled to join the American cast of "Dancing with the Stars" partnering Jerry Springer, a man she says is "one of the nicest" she's ever met. Throughout the series Jerry and Kym became the clear audience favourite with host, Tom Bergeron, referring to the dancing duo as "the heart and soul of the show".
During Kym and Jerry's seven weeks of competition the couple formed a lifelong friendship and on their last episode Jerry described Kym as "America's Sweetheart with an Australian accent".
Keeping Australia updated of her American adventures, Kym wrote her popular weekly 'behind the scenes' diary for OK! Magazine..
