Kandi Burruss was ¼ of the R&B girl group Xscape who rose to fame in the early 1990s. Alongside sisters LaTocha and Tamika Scott and childhood friend Tameka Cottle, Burruss was aged 16 when the group came out with their debut single, "Just Kickin’ It," on which Burruss sang lead vocals. The group continued to gain a fan base with their other singles, such as “Tonight,” “Love On My Mind,” “Understanding.” Soon after, they released their debut album, Hummin' Comin' At 'Cha in 1993, which went platinum.
In the beginning, all of the girls in Xscape shared lead vocals, but as they were starting their second album, Burruss and LaTocha Scott took the lead on most of their songs, which brought tension in the group. Burruss sung lead on two singles off their second album Off The Hook, which were, "Feels So Good" and "Can't Hang".
In 1998, the group released their third album Traces of My Lipstick, but then broke up.
