Personal: Hartwig is single, and resides in Franklin, Tenn. He earned All-Conference and second-team All-State honors as a senior offensive tackle at Valley (West Des Moines, Iowa) High School and honorable mention All-Conference after leading his high school basketball team in rebounding. He also competed in track and field, winning the conference discus title in two consecutive years. He was born Justin James Hartwig on November 21, 1978 in Mankato, Minn.
College: Hartwig was a three-year starter at right tackle for the Kansas Jayhawks who appeared in 38 games with 34 starts. He earned second-team All-Big 12 honors as a senior captain and was named honorable mention All-Big 12 as a junior. He earned a major in communication studies.
Pros: Since Justin Hartwig’s immersion into the starting center’s role in 2003, he has provided a stabilizing force to a talented offensive line. Having never played center prior to 2003 training camp, the former collegiate right tackle inherited the responsibility following the departure of 2002 starter Gennaro DiNapoli and a knee injury to then-back-up Tom Ackerman. He grabbed the opportunity and has yet to look back, starting all but one game since that time. Hartwig has played in 34 career games with 31 starts. As a rookie, he saw limited action, playing in three contests. He was selected by the Titans in the sixth round (187th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft.
