Prior to establishing his film career, Julian Schnabel made a name for himself (throughout the 1980s) as a "neo-expressionist" artist/painter (some of his paintings involved smashed plates glued to wooden panels). His work has been exhibited at art galleries around the world, and he has been known as the "self-proclaimed lion of the New York art world".
His wife Olatz López Garmendia appeared as Reinaldo's mother in Before Night Falls (2000), also serving as the movie's executive producer.
Studied at the University of Houston, Texas from 1969 to 1973, where he received his B.F.A..
Did the paintings, photos and art direction for the album "By the way" (2002) by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Father of five children: Stella Schnabel, Vito Maria Schnabel and Lola Schnabel with his first wife Jacqueline; the twins Cy Schnabel and Olmo Schnabel with his present wife Olatz López Garmendia. All of his children appeared on Before Night Falls (2000).
His daughter Stella Schnabel used to date Red Hot Chili Peppers lead guitarist John Frusciante. They have since broken up.
