Nickson-Soul was born Julia Nickson in Singapore, of British paternal and Chinese maternal ancestry. She attended the University of Hawaii.[1] She was married to the American actor David Soul for six years from 1987 to 1993, and had one daughter, China, with him.

She is a practicing Scientologist, having joined the Church in 1996.[2]
