Jermaine Jackson entered the music industry as part of the Jackson 5, a popular R&B musical group formed in the mid 1960s, along with his four brothers, Jackie, Tito, Marlon and the future superstar Michael Jackson. They signed with Motown Records in 1969. As the co-lead vocalist of the group after brother Michael, Jermaine performed famous parts of “I Want You Back” (1969), “I'll Be There” (1970), “I Am Love,” and “Dancing Machine,” and among other Jackson 5 hits, until 1976 when the group decided to change labels due to creative differences. While the rest of the Jackson 5 moved to Epic Records, Jermaine stayed at Motown and left the group.

Like Michael, Jermaine also started a solo career while a member of The Jackson 5 and enjoyed hits with songs like the 1972 remake of “Daddy's Home,” “That's How Love Goes” (1972) and 1975's “Let's Be Young Tonight” Upon separating from his brothers, he went on to produce numerous solo records with his father-in-law, Motown owner Berry Gordy. Jermaine received a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for his album Let's Get Serious (1979). The album's title track, written and produced by Stevie Wonder, became a No 1 hit on the R&B chart and stayed there for six weeks. It was also No.2 on the Hot Dance Music/Club play list. Other Hot 100 Top 20 hits produced by Jermaine at Motown during the 1970s to 1980s include “Bass Odyssey” (1976), “Feel The Fire,” (1977), “Isn't She Lovely” (1978), “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” (1981) and “Let Me Tickle Your Fancy” (1982, with Devo on backup vocals).

In 1983, Jermaine quit Motown for Arista Records, where he generated a pair of hits in 1984 with “Dynamite” (No. 5) and “Do What You Do” (No. 13). The same year, “Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin',” a duet track with brother Michael, hit No. 1 on the dance chart. Jermaine also found himself rejoining the Jackson 5 for their unsuccessful Victory tour in 1984. Jermaine next collaborated with Pia Zadora in the song “When The Rain Begins To Fall,” which topped several singles charts in Europe in 1985, and had his final chart victory in 1989 with “Don't Take It Personal,” which became No. 1 on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart.

In the 1990s, Jermaine spent much of his time away from his studio, despite releasing a couple of records in 1991 (Greatest Hits & Rare Classics and You Said). It was also in 1991 that Jermaine created controversy when “Word To The Badd,” a lightly veiled criticism of his brother Michael, was leaked to radio stations. The lyrics were later changed for final release, making the song about an ex-lover instead of Michael. The following year, Jermaine teamed up with his companion Margaret Maldonado and Suzanne De Passe to produce “The Jacksons: An American Dream,” a high-rated miniseries about the history of The Jackson 5 where Jermaine was portrayed by his son, Jermaine, Jr. Directed by Karen Arthur, the biopic brought Jermaine a 1993 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Miniseries.

Between 2000 and 2004, Jermaine co-wrote a book proposal with former family confidante, Stacy Brown, titled “Legacy.” The book was to focus on Jermaine's inner-most opinions on his brother Michael's guilt or innocence on molesting children. The two, however, had a dispute after Brown worked with ex-Jackson publicist and Motown guru Bob Jones to write “Michael Jackson: The Man Behind The Mask,” which was released by Select Books, Inc. at the end of Michael Jackson's criminal trial. Due to differences on the accounts of the book, “Legacy” was not published. During Michael’s 2005 child molestation trial, Jermaine became a loyal supporter of his brother. He accompanied Michael in court on a number of occasions and came to Michael's defense several times on “The Larry King show.” In 2006, Jermaine stated in the media his plans to build an entertainment complex in Yerevan, Armenia, that will allow artists to perform for local audiences. A hotel, restaurant and television company will also be built as part of the project.

In early 2007, Jermaine became a contestant on the British reality series “Celebrity Big Brother,” in which a group of celebrities spend a week in a house. He ended up winning with housemates Dirk Benedict and Shilpa Shetty. The success made Jermaine a favorite in the U.K. and won him countless new fans. During his time on the Big Brother house, the housemates had to create a tribute band for The Jackson 5 and the performance of “I Want You Back” put The Jackson 5 back on the U.K. charts at No. 53. Jermaine returned to the U.K. in March for the Channel 4 show “Musicool” as a mentor, and then in April, was seen in a special of ITV's “Challenge Anneka.”

Jermaine is planning a stage show based on his family to be released in England. He stated that the Jacksons are recording an album and planning a family tour. His latest album, Big Brother: Jermaine Jackson, is set to be released in late 2007 on his brother Jackie's label Jesco Records.
