Giada Colagrande was born in Pescara, Italy, on October 16, 1975. In 1995, she started making videoart. In 1997, she realized her first short film "Carnaval" (35mm, 13 min.). From 1997 to 2000, she worked on the contemporary art project "Volume", making documentaries on such artists as Alfredo Pirri, Jannis Kounellis, Bernhard Rudiger, Nunzio, Raimund Kummer, Gianni Dessi, 'Sol Lewitt', Maurizio Savini. In 1998, she made "Fetus 4 Brings Death" (35mm, 25 min.), and in 2000 "n.3" (video, 7min.). Her short films and documentaries have been shown in various film festivals and art galleries. In 2002, Giada wrote, directed and starred in her first feature film Aprimi il cuore (2002) (Open my heart). It premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 2002, and went on to Tribeca Film Festival 2003 and many other international film festivals, where it won various awards. Aprimi il cuore (2002) was released in Italy by Lucky Red and in the USA by Strand Releasing. In 2005, she directed her second feature Before It Had a Name (2005), which she co-wrote and co-starred in with Willem Dafoe. The movie premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 2005 and was then shown in other prestigious international film festivals such as San Sebastian Film Festival.
