“The first audition I did for the kids, I got those two sisters (Emma and Sarah Bolger). They're beyond good. Martin Sheen went to see it and he said he thought the kids' performances were the best kids' performances he'd ever seen.” Jim Sheridan (In America (2002) director/writer).
Little sister of actress Sarah Bolger, Emma Bolger made her acting debut opposite her sister in Jim Sheridan's critically acclaimed romantic drama film In America (2002). Her charming and spectacular turn as Ariel, the youngest daughter of an Irish immigrant couple (played by Paddy Considine and Samantha Morton) adjusts to life in the United States following the death of their son, received much praise. She was nominated for a Golden Satellite Award and a Broadcast Film Critics Association Award (both in 2004). She eventually won an award, a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a Feature Film - Young Actress Age Ten or Younger. As for the film, it was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (Djimon Hounsou), Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Samantha Morton) and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (Jim Sheridan, Naomi Sheridan and Kirsten Sheridan).
“It's a brilliant story! It's kind of happy, sad and funny.” Emma Bolger (on the film In America (2002)).
Following her successful debut, Emma landed a small yet adorable non-speaking role as Child with Ice Cream in the Irish crime drama comedy movie by director John Crowley, Intermision (2003; starring Colin Farrell). In December that year, she was invited to the talk shows "The View" and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien." And in the beginning of 2004, she had a recurring role as Orla Boland in the short-lived Irish television series "Proof."
2005 saw 9-year-old Emma playing the title role of Heidi (2005), a young orphan girl sent by her aunt to live with her elderly grandfather in the high Alpine mountains. In the delightful film adaptation of a children's book in 1880 by Swiss author Johanna Spyri, Emma shared the screen with such leading actors as Max von Sydow, Dame Diana Rigg, Geraldine Chaplin and Caroline Pegg.
Emma is currently on set filming her upcoming project, The Snow Prince. In the British movie, directed by John Henderson, Emma will co-star with Richard Attenborough and Maxwell Caulfield.
