David Crosby, who in 1963 recorded his first solo session, formed The Byrds (initially named “Jet Set”) with Roger McGuinn. Joining them were bassist Chris Hillman and drummer Michael Clarke. The band later topped the charts with the cover of Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man.” As a singer (and guitarist) of the group, Crosby was known for his soaring harmonies and unusual phrasing in their songs. However, the friction between Crosby and other members heightened and resulted in his dismissal in 1967.
After meeting Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, Crosby formed the group Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) and launched their 1969 self-titled debut album, which spawned two Top Forty hit singles. Crosby’s self-written songs for the band were “Guinnevere,” “Almost Cut My Hair,” “Long Time Gone, “Delta” and “Wooden Ships” (co-wrote with Paul Kantner and Stephen Stills).
Not long after Neil Young joined the group, the No.1 album Déjà Vu (1969) was released. It was then followed by the release of the double live album Four Way Street. While CSN was on hiatus, Crosby released a first solo album If I Could Only Remember My Name (1971), featuring contributions by Nash, Young, Joni Mitchell, as well as the members of Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, and Santana. Crosby also recorded several albums with Graham Nash as a duo.
The writer of such songs as “Where Will I Be,” “Carry Me,” “Bittersweet,” “Time After Time,” “Foolish Man” and “In My Dreams,” Crosby was featured in electronic composer Ned Lagin’s project Seastones and in Hot Tuna’s track “Highway Song.” Although having domestic problems, his band CSN released a greatest hits compilation titled So Far.
In the 1990s, Crosby stepped into the acting world. He first accepted the supporting role of Damian Lyndell in the comedy movie To Cross the Rubicon (1991) and then took minor parts in the thriller Backdraft (1991, as a hippie) and the family film Hook (1991, played pirate Tickles). The artist also guest starred in the sitcoms “Roseanne” (1992) and “Flying Blind” (1993). During 1993-1994, Crosby could be seen playing Chester in several episodes of the sitcom “The John Larroquette Show.” In 1996, he shared the screen with actresses Kirstie Alley and Nancy Cartwright in the TV drama Suddenly. The singer also guest starred as himself in series like “The Simpsons” (1993), “Ellen” (1997) and “Chicago Hope” (1998).
Resuming his musical journey, Crosby launched a number of solo albums such as Oh Yes I Can (1989), Thousand Roads (1993), It’s All Coming Back To Me Now (1995) and King Biscuit Flower Hour (1996). With keyboardist James Raymond (his biological son) and guitarist Jeff Pevar, the artist formed CPR (Crosby, Pevar & Raymond) and released a 1998 eponymous album, the live albums Live at Cuesta College (1998) and Live at the Wiltern (1999), as well as the studio album Just Like Gravity (2001).
In 2006, Crosby released Voyage Box Set on Rhino/Wea recording company.
