Azita Ghanizada was born into one of the most unstable geopolitical areas in the world in 1979: Kabul, Afghanistan. The country teetered on the edge of a civil war, and by the time she was a year old, the Soviet Union had invaded. No wonder her family fled the country while she was just a baby. They sought -- and were granted -- asylum in the United States.
Ghanizada was then raised in the Northern Virginia Suburbs of Washington D.C., working on Capitol Hill before graduating from James Madison High School in Fairfax County, near the Virginia town of Vienna. She later attended Virginia Tech, studying politics and international journalism
