Magazine editor. Born on November 3, 1949, in London, England. The daughter of a newspaper editor, Anna Wintour has become an international fashion icon in her role as editor in chief of the highly influential Vogue magazine. She is known for her oversized dark glasses, high heels, sharp bob hairstyle, and icy demeanor.
Long before Vogue, however, Anna Wintour started out in the fashion department of Harpers & Queen in London. Over the years, she rose up the editorial ladder and bounced from publication to publication and between New York and London. In 1976, she moved to New York to take the position of fashion editor at Harpers Bazaar. Her association with the famed fashion magazine started in 1983 when she became the creative director of Vogue in 1983. Wintour then returned to London in 1986 to take the held of the British edition of Vogue.
Returning to New York, Anna Wintour finally reached the pinnacle of her careereditor in chief of Voguein 1988. For nearly twenty years, she has been a decisive force in fashion and is said to have helped make the careers of such designers as Marc Jacobs and Alexander McQueen.
Along with her innovative fashion editorial work, Anna Wintour has a reputation for being aloof and cold. It has been said that she is difficult to work for, insisting that her staff always looks the part of the magazines fashion-forward, rail-thin aesthetic. One of Wintours former assistants, Lauren Weisberger, wrote The Devil Wears Prada (2003), a fictionalized account of her days at Vogue with a demanding boss not unlike Wintour as the title character. The book was made into a film in 2006, and Wintour turned heads when she arrived at the films premiere dressed in Prada. This move showed critics and fans alike that Wintour is not without a sense of humor.
In general, Wintour appears to be unfazed by comments about her in the media. What doesnt seem to get much mention is her charitable work. Wintour helped raise money for the Twin Towers fund after the September 11th terror attacks. With the Council of Fashion Designers of America, she helped create a new fund to encourage and support up-and-coming designers.
Anna Wintour announced in 2006 plans to allow a documentary film to be made of the behind-the-scenes work on Vogues September issue. Perhaps for the first time, audiences will get a glimpse of the real Anna Wintour in action. But no matter what her reputation becomes, she will always be known as an influential force in the world of fashion.
