In a time where "manufactured" bands are sold as the real deal and the true passion and intensity of music is thought to be dead, it's hard not to ask, "Is this it? Did we reach the end of the musical road? Is all that's left is to retrace our steps and regurgitate the leftovers of our pioneering forefathers?"
Weary ears, ye need not lose faith.
Alpha Rev is here to save your musical souls.
Alpha Rev is possibly the most refreshing thing on the music scene in years. Self-described as a mixture of "Beethoven and Buckley with British sensibility and American rock," their sound is like picking all of the good parts off of your favorite CDs and blending them to create something even Willy Wonka couldn't fathom. But let's not sugarcoat it. Beyond refreshing, what Alpha Rev brings is realness, a realness reminiscent upon such groundbreakers like Led Zeppelin, The Stones, Radiohead and other greats who made you say out loud in your car, "Yeah man, I feel you." ATX magazine called Alpha Rev “easily the most accomplished and polished artist that the Heart of Texas has to offer, offering something unique to many bands these days.” Truly, their sound can only be compared, not described, and is something like that first rollercoaster ride, an experience only for yourself.
Alpha Rev is the six member brainchild of front man Casey McPherson, who may just be the only person alive doing what we all promised ourselves we would be doing when we grew up. McPherson says it all comes down to only one thing for him, "Do what you love doing, because you love doing it," and embodies the true rock star spirit, admittedly going without food sometimes because "Music is what (he) does." And indeed it is. Antone's web site once said of Casey, “Witness Casey in action and you know God made this man to play music,” and upon hearing his vocals it is undeniable that talent like this didn’t just fall off the last truck to boy-band land. Soundcheck Magazine described Casey’s voice as “achingly sweet,” and laced on top of Alpha Rev a “result both exhilarating and sobering,” an ironic mix that appeals to the bi-polar music fan thriving inside everyone.
Alpha Rev is not the first endeavor for Casey. He has been playing music since he was five, starting with piano, then moving to playing for his church until his "creative tendencies" seemed to conflict with church agenda. He then began performing in clubs for more open-minded crowds with The Wasted Spaceman, a band he created with a friend. The Wasted Spacemen eventually became Monkey's Paw which then became Endochine, a name soon not unfamiliar to music-loving Austinites. The band performed with such bands as Staind, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pete Yorn and rocked crowds in excess of 80,000 people performing at the Bud Bowl and Red Bull’s FLUGTAG. It was with Endochine that Casey earned his right-of-passage rockstar cred, being arrested 12 times, getting kicked out of six clubs, and shelling out for other people's wrecked cars of which he admits, "Yeah, I was driving them."
Proving that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, Casey manifested Alpha Rev. Artist Jackson Pollack’s work was once compared to baked macaroni for its never before seen approach that in the end created a masterpiece. Band members Zak Loy - guitarist, Drew Walters - bassist, Dorian Colbert - drummer, Dave Wiley - cellist, and Candi Sanders - background vocalist, are the macaroni creating this masterpiece. Zak and Drew also perform with the band Damesviolet, another Austinite familiar that Zak, along with his brother Beaux, formed 9 years ago. Upon hearing their sound, it becomes evident that the two aren’t rookies. Lending his percussion prowess to Alpha Rev is Dorian Colbert, who also plays with the band Lomita. His drums affirm the real in Alpha Rev like a heartbeat - one set to the rhythm of the soul. Dave Wiley provides the most unexpected aspect of the sextet through his cello. His sound makes up the atmosphere of the band’s comprised sound that critics have described as “atmospheric and dreamy.” Last in mention but not in rank, Candi Sander's tempting background vocals are everything her name implies. Candi’s voice was described as “lustful” by Soundcheck magazine, and adds that raw sugar element that perfects the sweetness of their musical sound.
Alpha Rev released their debut EP in December 2005, available for sale through iTunes and several Austin music retailers. The EP is a no-pause, no-skip, beginning to end listen, showing a glimpse of the musical “journey” that so many music critics liberally use. Melodic.net’s Kaj Roth described the EP as beautifully produced, having big orchestral sounding pop tunes with lots of Beatles influences and saying “truly something for all hi-fi lovers out there.”
Looking forward to the future, Casey says, "Now, I'm on my own...I'm free to do something good for people with my music...There will be a new music coming out of me that I've never had before...so there. Kick me out, fire me, poke me in the eye. I'll never stop rockin'."
