Adam Rayner was born in 1977 in Shrewsbury but grew up in a small village near Norwich in Norfolk. He has a brother Matthew, six years his senior. Having an American mother and a British father means he has dual nationality, and the family lived in the United States when he was a child, albeit briefly, before returning to East Anglia. He attended Durham University where he got a 2. 1 degree in English, and, whilst there became a member of the university's drama group.
After graduation he took the two-year course at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He has appeared on the London stage most notably in the American play 'This Is Our Life', where he took over from the star, Matt Damon, for two weeks, and with the Royal Shakespeare Company. On television he has been cast as a toy-boy, both in the serial 'Mistresses' and 'At Home With the Braithwaites' with Amanda Redman, who - according to British tabloid papers - was his fling in real life and in 2008 was, somewhat bizarrely, killed by a giant wasp in 'Doctor Who'.
