LONDON (AFP) - A man has been arrested over the theft of a camera containing photographs of Prince William and his girlfriend, Kate Middleton, taken on holiday in the Caribbean, police said Monday.

The Sun tabloid reported that it was approached by two men trying to sell photos of the couple on the island of Mustique.

Scotland Yard said the newspaper informed police and a man was arrested on suspicion of theft and handling stolen goods.

A spokesman said: "A 25-year-old man was arrested at 9:00 am on the morning of August 31 on suspicion of theft from a motor vehicle and handling stolen goods.

"He was taken to a west London police station and bailed to return on a date in September."

The two men, who called themselves George and John, had demanded 50,000 pounds for the pictures, the newspaper reported.

They claimed they had found the photographs on a flashcard in a gutter in northwest London.

The camera is thought to have been stolen from Middleton's younger sister, Pippa, in London.

The pictures feature the prince, who is second-in-line to the throne, and a bikini-wearing Middleton, both 26, in a swimming pool and kissing and cuddling.

Other pictures show Middleton doing yoga-type exercises on the beach and the prince wearing a woman's hat and striking a pose for the camera.

The royal family refused to comment on the report and referred questions to police.

The prince recently completed a two-month attachment with the Royal Navy which saw him join a drugs bust in the Atlantic that netted 50 million pounds' worth of cocaine.

He is expected to spend time with elite Special Forces units later this year.
