Anne-Marie Duff is a prominent English actress born on 8 October 1970 in Southall, Greater London, England to Irish parents. Her father was a decorator and her mother worked in a shoe shop. She was encouraged by her parents to take up acting in order to overcome her shyness. To hone her acting skills, she joined Drama Centre at University of the Arts in London. Anne-Marie Duff worked as a waitress in order to support her studies. She is married to James McAvoy, a Scottish actor and lives with him in Stroud Green.
After her graduation in acting, Anne-Marie Duff started her career on stage in 1994 before moving on to television and film. She has acted in many stage plays and exhibited her talents in Uncle Silas, The Mill on the Floss, La Grande Magia, Peter Pan, War and Peace, King Lear, Vassa, Collected Stories, A Doll's House, The Daughter In Law, The Playboy Of The Western World, Days of Wine and Roses, The Soldier's Fortune and Saint Joan. Anne-Marie Duff is a versatile actress who has been a part of many radio dramas, including The Art of Love, A Time That Was, Ears Wide Open and The Possessed.
In 1997, Anne-Marie Duff acted in the TV serial, Trial & Retribution and since then, she has been a regular face in many popular TV series. She has also appeared in many TV miniseries, like Amongst Women (1998), Aristocrats (1999), Reach For The Moon (2000) and Charles II: The Power & the Passion (2003). In 2002, she played the role of Theresa in the TV movie, Sinners.
Anne-Marie Duff portrayed Olya in the TV series, Doctor Zhivago, based on the famous novel written by Boris Pasternak and this TV series was aired on ITV. She had a major breakthrough in her career in the year 2004, when she was signed to play the role of Fiona in the British comedy drama TV series, Shameless. Her character was well received by the audience and she was shot to fame. She won the IFTA award under the 'Best Actress in a TV Drama' category for her impressive performance in Shameless. Anne-Marie Duff was also nominated for IFTA 2004 as the Best Actress in Television for the same TV series. She won the Broadcasting Press Guild Best Actress Award in 2005 and was nominated for the Best Actress award in British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 2005 and 2006 for Shameless.
In 2005, Anne-Marie Duff proved her acting skills in BBC miniseries, The Virgin Queen, in which she portrayed Queen Elizabeth I of England. Just like Shameless, this miniseries also won her many awards and recognition. She was nominated for both IFTA and BAFTA awards 2007 under the category 'Best Actress in a Lead Role in Television' for her performance in The Virgin Queen. Anne-Marie Duff won the Best Actress Award in the BAFTA Cymru awards ceremony 2008 for her contribution in the series, The History of Mr Polly (2007).
Anne-Marie Duff entered the film industry by featuring in the film Enigma, which was released in 2001. She got her recognition in the silver screen, when she played the role of Margaret in the feature film The Magdalene Sisters (2002). She has also acted in many other feature films, like Notes on a Scandal (2006), Garage (2007), The Waiting Room (2007), French Film (2008) and Is There Anybody There? (2008). Anne-Marie Duff has signed to act in the forthcoming film The Last Station, a biographical film about Leo Tolstoy under the direction of Michael Hoffman.
